In the shoes of another person of color

Keith Woods' presentation was tremendously helpful and important for aspiring journalist. Too often, people say things that are taken out of context because of a lack of thought and concern for others' life circumstances. Although I am a minority student, I find myself unaware of some of the racial issues that face American minorities. The presentation by Keith, dean of faculty at The Poynter Institute, showed me how important it is to be aware of and sensitive to the potential impact my words can have. He also showed me that I have a special obligation as a journalist to make sure I am responsible with my word choices when interacting with people from all walks of life.
